A "kombit" is a community gathering to plant gardens in Haiti. A man invites as many people as he needs and can care for that day. The people are invited either to "sakle" (remove grass and prepare the soil) or to plant. When planting, men use a hoe to dig while women and young children plant the beans or corn.

 

They sing Haitian songs together to keep up their spirits as they work from around 7 o'clock in the morning until 3 or 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

 

The people are served a meal in the morning at the start of work, usually milk mixed with corn or with coffee and cassava. They eat again upon completing work, typically rice and beans.

 

 

 

In a country that has 90% unemployment and contaminated water and food resources, it is vital to work on getting the basic needs of Haitians met first. These include: Clean Water, Food, Shelter, Medical Treatment, and the Love of Jesus Christ.  New Life Haiti (Pastor Rick and Debbie Hutchinson) strongly believe, with the love of others- becoming the feet and hands of Christ, Haiti can be changed one village at a time.
